HDH’s September Finest and Rarest Auction Dazzles at $8.1M Global Market Leader Surges On In Record-Breaking Year

Hart Davis Hart’s record-breaking year continues as An Auction of Finest and Rarest Wines on September 25th and 26th surpassed its pre-sale high estimate for total sales of $8,098,730. 100% of the 1,813 lots sold to 1,014 registered bidders, and live bidders overtook advance bids to win more than 31% of the lots. The average hammer price was substantially above the midpoint of the range at 131% of low estimate and reflects the strongest performance relative to estimate at Hart Davis Hart since the pandemic-era boom. Many wines achieved the highest prices in at least two years. These tremendous results firmly establish Hart Davis Hart as the global leader and most trusted name in wine auctions as the market surges into the fall season.
High-value benchmark producers Domaine de la Romanée-Conti, Domaine Leroy, Comte Liger-Belair and Domaine Rousseau all exhibited resounding strength after periods of relatively modest growth. A single bottle of 2005 La Tâche, Domaine de la Romanée-Conti sold for $8,963 (lot 1051, $4,000-6,000) and 2 bottles of 2002 Grands-Echézeaux, Domaine de la Romanée-Conti achieved the highest price in two years selling for $7,768 (lot 106, $3,500-5,500). Four bottles of 1993 Vosne-Romanée, Beaux Monts, Domaine Leroy from the Collection of Thomas O. Ryder more than doubled the low estimate at $15,535 (lot 130, $7,500-11,000), as did 2 bottles of 2007 La Tâche, Domaine de la Romanée-Conti from Mr. Ryder, selling for $11,950 (lot 110, $5,500-8,500).

Blue chip Bordeaux saw the strongest results of all major categories relative to estimates, with hammers averaging 138% of the low estimate. Among the most exciting lots of Friday’s session was a 6-bottle original wood case of 1966 Château Palmer which incited a bidding war and ultimately more than quadrupled the low estimate, selling for $11,950 and setting a world record (lot 1444, $2,400-3,500). More broadly, wines from the 1990 vintage shone: Cases of 1990 Château La Conseillante (lot 1374) and 1990 Château Lafite Rothschild (lot 1377) each sold for $6,573 (each lot estimated $3,000-4,500), and 12 bottles of 1990 Château L’Evangile more than doubled their estimate at $4,541 (lot 1375, $2,000-3,000).
