Last week’s Hart Davis Hart Auction generated sales totaling $6,936,282, surpassing its pre-sale low estimate of $4,579,911. The auction sold 100% of its 2507 lots over two action-packed days.
Day 1 of the sale exclusively featured “The Searle Collection,” the private cellar of D. Gideon Searle, built over five decades and with great adoration and attention to detail. This cellar featured mature Bordeaux, large formats across several categories, and a dizzying amount of Krug Champagne. The collection opened with an exciting amount of Bordeaux, with 1961 Latour (5bs) going for $19,120. Over half of the 29 lots of Château d’Yquem hammered at or above the high estimate. Multiple lots of DRC hammered above their estimates, as pictured here. Dueling lots of 1990 DRC Richebourg fetched the highest prices of the day at $71,700 (lot 352: 5mags; lot 353: 3x3L).
Krug Champagne stole the show, which featured over 170 separate lots of Krug Collection, Rosé, Clos du Mesnil, Clos d’Ambonnay, Grande Cuvée, and more. The iconic 1982 Krug Collection in magnum (3mags) went for $8,963. Krug was not the only Champagne to perform well, however, as both Dom Pérignon and Salon both enjoyed an enormous amount of absentee and live bids.
