Hart Davis Hart Auction Co. hosted an extraordinary series of auctions last week, selling 4,346 lots over three days in April’s Auction of Fine & Rare Wines and The Founders’ Collection on April 2nd, 3rd & 4th. The auctions saw 100% sell-through rates, for a combined total of $7,274,921.
Friday’s session was dedicated to The Founders’ Collection, a Finest & Rarest sale hailing from a pair of collecting friends, featuring a focused selection of producers, including DRC, Armand Rousseau, Jacky Truchot, Roulot, Raveneau, Giacosa, and Giacomo Conterno. The wines from Burgundian legend Truchot doubled and even tripled estimates, with many setting all-time records.
All told, this section of 12 lots sold for $165,627 ($77,400-116,400):

Friday’s top lot was 12 bottles of 1993 Chambertin Armand Rousseau, which sold for $59,750 (lot 3715, est. $42,000-65,000).

Rounding out the Founders’ Collection were unprecedented runs of Piedmont greats Giacomo Conterno, Bruno Giacosa, and Bartolo Mascarello. Each spanning between sixty and eighty years of winemaking history, such large caches are unlikely to ever appear again, and bidders responded accordingly:

The April Auction of Fine & Rare Wines was a two-day marathon featuring wines at all price points from around the globe. Prices for Italian reds from Piedmont and Tuscany continued to climb, especially from Roagna: three bottles of 2015 Barbaresco, Crichët Pajé Roagna sold for $5,736 (lot 542) while a single magnum of the same sold for $3,585 (lot 543).

Representing the sale’s comprehensive reach, wines from every region saw competitive bidding. Six bottles of 1990 Château Latour sold for $5,377 (lot 1894, $3,200-4,800) and a dozen 2013 Nine Suns Red Wine soared past its estimate to go for $3,107 (lot 2773, $1,100-1,700). From Burgundy, a single bottle of 2007 Corton-Charlemagne Coche-Dury sold for $5,019 (lot 597, $3,000-4,500) and twelve bottles of 2005 Latricières-Chambertin Camille Giroud sold for $3,824 (lot 633, $1,900-2,800). Approaching 200 years of age, a bottle of 1827 Boal Madeira Quinta do Serrado went for $4,541 (lot 2257, $2,000-3,000) and a more recent trio of bottles of 2020 Rumbo al Norte Comando G climbed to $2,868 (lot 309, $1,200-1,800).
